What Happens When We Get Too Much Exercise?
June 27, 2007
We know what happens when we don’t get enough exercise—muscles become weaker, we lose energy and we get flabby, but what about when we get too much exercise?
This is called overtraining, which can produce some of the same results as under-exercising can do. But how do we know when we are in that zone of overtraining or pushing too hard? Since overtraining is difficult to do, it still can happen. Those who tend toward vigorous exercise should take at least one day off per week and should alternate between moderate/light workouts and more intense workouts. Moreover, if exercise is leaving you more exhausted then energized, you could be suffering from an acute case of overtraining. As individuals excessively exercise they are risking more than poor performance, they are putting their health at risk. Look for the following signs and symptoms and get things back on track:
- Chronically elevated heart rate at rest and during exercise.
- Loss of appetite.
- Excessive fatigue and tiredness.
- Chronic nagging joints or muscles problems.
- Moodiness, irritability.
- Decreased performance.
- Insomnia.
- Increased effort to do your workout, where once was easy.
- Increased illness and respiratory infections.
- Loss of menstrual cycle.
So everyone, if your workout isn’t feeling good to you, take at look at the frequency, intensity and time again. A frequent assessment keeps you on track in overtraining just as it does in under training.
