What Burns More Fat? High Intensity Or Low Intensity Workouts?

August 28, 2007

There are many different programs that are through video or dvd’s that feature low-intensity workouts.  These workouts claim to maximize your fat- burning.  The theory is that low-intensity aerobic exercise will burn more fat as the energy source than any other fuel source, in turn you will lose more body fat.

It is true that in low-intensity workouts use a higher percentage of fat is burned as the fuel source, about 60% is from fat versus 35% burned in the high intensity workout, BUT in the final analysis high-intensity exercise still burns more calories from fat.

For example:  say you workout for 30 in low-intensity exercise at a level of 50 percent of maximum exercise capacity, you will burn approximately 200 calories with 120 of the calories coming from fat.

Conversely, if you work for 30 minutes in high-intensity, 75% of your maximal exercise capacity, you will burn approximately 400 calories.  Using 35 percent it is 140 calories have come from  the storage fat.

Yes, the more intense exercise burns more, but you still have to take in other variables that may restrict you from working that high, such as overweight, diabetes, asthma and others.

We just have to remember that the low-intensity workouts still are a very good way to lose storage fat, you just have to go a little longer.

Always bear in mind that you lose weight and body fat when you burn more calories than you take in!!

You know, the balance thing????

The New Glycemic Index

August 27, 2007

Now that this new idea on the glycemic index and it’s direct link to weight loss through by which foods impact the blood sugar levels the most, you may want to know which bread is best for weight loss according to this index!  It will surprise you that this answer is the very one you may be eating.

Here’s the breakdown:  Pumpernickel has the least 41, Sourdough the next, 52, Rye at 58, white at 70 and lastly whole wheat at 73.  Whole wheat has the most!   So it turns out that whole wheat bread isn’t the healthiest bread for weight loss, according to that index.  This means that this particular food breaks down quickly, causing sharp spikes in blood sugar.  This in turn will trigger hunger or cravings and then you tend to overeat.  The pumpernickel on the other hand will break down more slowly, helping you to maintain a stable blood sugar level which will give you the feeling of fullness!
