A Great Yoga Pose That’s Wonderful For Losing Weight

June 12, 2007

We are all looking for a quick fix in losing weight, looking slimmer and feeling great!!! But I have a wonderful secret that will bring results in seconds!!  Interested?????

It is just standing up straight!  Tadasana, the mountain pose, is the most basic of standing poses in all of yoga.  Like a mountain, you want to have a broad, stable base from which you can extend up to the sky.  It really does teach you to stand properly and in alignment.

You learn to balance, stand firmer, more grounded into the earth and extend up comfortably.

First, begin with the feet, by bringing the big toe together, lining up the little toe with the outer ridge of the heel.  Spread the feet, the toes and the bones in them.  Bring the weight more evenly into the heels, lift your arches, then enhance this action by lengthening your leg muscles all the way up into your hips.    Contract the quadriceps, a feeling of firming the muscles into the bones.  Here is that stable base we were speaking of at the beginning.

Place your hands on your hips and extend the sides of the body up from your hips to your arms.  This will give you space and length.  Then lower your arms while maintaining the lift in the side body.  Lengthen up through the crown of your head and balance over the pelvis.  The shoulders come back and down in a relaxed fashion.  Make sure you are aware of the shoulders as they have a tendency to rise up around the ears!

Lift your chest and sternum and breathe fully with ease and effort.  This open the body all the while you are aware of how it feels to be in alignment.  Just breathe and observe those sensations.

This also can be done against a wall for alignment. The feedback from the wall will help with the sense of lengthening. It can also be done lying down with feet against the wall, with great support from the earth.

There are other benefits from Tadasana, mountain pose, and they are:

  • Relieves backaches
  • It develops agility
  • It teaches correct alignment
  • It opens the chest
  • It strengthens the feet
  • Corrects small misalignments of the legs

So come on, everyone, stand up straight, it’s worth feeling and looking better!!

Namaste!
