The Benefits Of Sleep

August 2, 2007

It takes the average person seven minutes to fall asleep, if it takes them longer, for instance, between 10 to 15 minutes then you are just sleepy, not exhausted.  If less it is an indication of being sleep deprived.  Usually women have more trouble with insomnia than men and it will eventually show on our bodies in multiple ways.

Research has shown that by not having enough sleep or rest it can contribute to weight gain.  It is quite important for the recovery from exercise and daily life but it is also vital for the goals we set to see results in our body.

It is quite astonishing to realize that over 70 million people in the United States suffer from sleep related disorders or problems.  This was done by the Academy of Sleep.  They also have found that there is a huge loss of revenue annually due to loss of productivity, concentration, memory, stress, alertness, and various other things.  Not to mention it affects our fitness results.

There are five stages to our sleep and they are vital for maximum recovery.  In each stage there is some stage of it that shuts down functions of the body in order to send more resources to others.  We really can’t do this while awake so sleep is effective and efficient for recovery.

We also have outside things that affect our sleep, such as exercise, meds, temperature, and food.  One obvious thing that affects sleep is caffeine.  Be sure to stay away from it after 5:00 p.m. for maximum results.

Listed below are ways you can improve your life with a much more thorough, rejuvenating sleep:

  1. Get your exercise and try to do it at a reasonable hour, not before bedtime, of course.
  2. take time to relax before bedtime.  Maybe your rituals will include drinking tea, or reading a calming book, or taking a bath.
  3. Don’t drink or smoke in the evening. How about quitting these habits, it would be much more beneficial period.
  4. Stay hydrated.  Remember being dehydrated makes it much harder to sleep and the body cannot recover well.
  5. Keep to whole foods.  It will keep your energy levels constant and assist your natural sleep cycles.
  6. Ahh, sleep in a cool, dark place.  That’s me all over the place.  Our bedrooms should be a peaceful place.
  7. Go to bed when you are tired.  Listen to your body and respond to it.  The body is always talking to us.  Listen to it.
  8. Make sure you get enough vitamins and minerals.  These are critical to sleep.

So tonight, check out your before bedreigimen. your diet, and your habits.  See if you need changes, make course corrections and start enjoying a good night’s sleep and maximum results for your body.

 Happy zzzzzz’s

Just nice brush up atricle. Need to have non fat diet dinner and atleast 2 hrs before to bed. Drinking tea may not be wise before going to bed. Warm water bath definitely helps. thanks

Got something to say?
