Summer Temperatures And Acclimation

July 2, 2008

So summer is finally here and if you happen to have any questions concerning working out in the heat, here is some good information to keep you safe as you acclimate to the hot temperatures!

1.  In order to acclimte to the heat, workout in the heat.  But go slow at it.  Begin with as little as 10-15 minutes until you work up to 20-60 minute session.   Most healthy people will take approximately 10-14 days to accomplish this.

2.  Important to note, you lose acclimation quite rapidly, for instance for each 2 days of not working out in it, you lose one day of acclimation.  In a period of 3-4 weeks of not working out in the warm temps you will be unacclimated again.  Even after a short break like the weekend you lose very quickly the acclimation.  So be wise.

3.  Always drink plenty of water and check with your doctor, you may have some health issues that will prevent you from working out in the heat.

It is certainly true that no matter where you travel, with a little research and planning you can develop a plan that will keep you on the mark the time you are away. THEN you can return home feeling more energized then when you left!

1. Make sure you ALWAYS drink water, and avoid sodas. Particularly if you are flying the skies of the world.

2. When you are out at the market, pick up some healthy snacks so you won’t go hungry and grab high fat and high sugar goodies.

4. Mentally make up your mind how you will eat when eating out at the local restaurants and you will most likely stick to a very healthy menu!

5. If your accommodations don’t offer a fitness facility, take along an exertube and maybe a jump rope. They are easily stored and they will provide great forms of cardio and strength anywhere.

6. Walk everywhere that you can!! See the local sights on foot, or go for hikes, or even better use the pool and swim laps, in short just keep moving while you explore!!!

7. Don’t forget to bring your exercise gear, meaning shoes and comfortable clothing so there are no excuses.

8. Here is your chance to get some rest too! Take time during the day to relax and rejuvenate!! What a gift you can give yourself!! It is always very critical to reconnect with yourself to assess what your body truly needs.

9. Most importantly, have a wonderful time because getting back to the old grind comes very quickly.
