Half Of Normal-Weight Individuals Suffer From High Body Fat Percentage In America

April 1, 2008

TUESDAY, April 1, 2008–Apart from what most people think, more than half of Americans have a high body fat percentage even though they may appear to be of normal weight.  As a result, these people are susceptible to diabetes, heart disease, and other disorders.

Women who have more than 30 percent body fat, and Men more than 20 percent are suffering from “normal weight obesity,” which means their weight may be normal for their size, but their body fat as much higher than it is supposed to be.  These people are often times referred to as the “skinny-fat” people.

This study warns medical professionals that body weight isn’t the only form of measure used to protect against health problems.  Normal-Weight individuals should also be counseled to exercise and build proper nutritional habits that would reduce their level of fat, especially along the mid-section.

Dr. David L. Katz, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University School of Medicine agrees that body weight is not a reliable gauge of obesity, or health.  He says, “A muscular man may have a very high body weight, yet be perfectly fit and healthy.  Many People whose body weight is in the normal range are anything but.”

Katz also states that many people are vulnerable to weight gain in all the wrong places, such as in and around vital organs of the stomach abdominal area, most notably the liver.

“Even a small amount of extra fat where it matters most can wreak metabolic havoc, increasing risk for diabetes and heart disease while leaving you with a body weight that looks perfectly innocent,” Katz said.  “Excess body fat in the belly is a menace, whatever your weight.  This study should sensitize patients and providers alike to this concern.”
