Enjoy Your Ab Workout With Music At A Faster Tempo

March 15, 2007

Often times students wonder what the tempo of music should be for abdominal work. According to ACE Certified News June/July 2005 Issue, the common tempo range recommended for abdominal work is about 120-130 BPM (beats per minute).  There is no research to oppose this as of yet.   However, Instructors that are updated, however use the 150-160 BPM which equals 16 beats or 8 counts being used for one repetition.  The benefits to doing this speed are physiologically more intense because you are fighting gravity longer. It is also much more motivating for the participant.  Usually fast pace music is inspiring and motivating whereas slower paced music tends to make the participant become bored quicker.  So the deduction is it’s not just the speed of the music that is important, but it is also the speed of the execution that makes it more of a difficult exercise or not.

Huh, I don’t think I have ever done an ab workout that fast…. I don’t know if I’d enjoy it. I think I’m more used to the slower speed of pilates.

I agree Hilary! PIlates actually makes me work harder because it has all the alignment principles in place. You are concentrating on precision, concentration, breath, and control. Plus the reps are slow and few. Versus in fitness classes, we just go for it with as much body alignment we can pay attention to. The faster classes get more reps, so hence the gravity fight. It’s nice to have variety though. Love your comments, keep them coming!
