Government Sponsered Diet DASH Lowers Chances Of Heart Attack And Stroke In Middle Aged Women
April 14, 2008
The research pooled 88,000 healthy women for almost 25 years. They studied their food choices and analyzed how many had heart attacks and strokes. Those with the best outcome had eating habits that were similar to those recommended by the government to stop high blood pressure.
The Government’s plan, DASH, diet favors fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat milk and plant-based protein over meat.
Women who followed thses eating habits were 24 percent less likely to have a heart attack and 18 percent less likely to have a stroke than women with a more traditional American diet.
Other research suggests that about two in five U.S. women at age 50 will eventually develop cardiovascular disease. But if one follows government guidelines, large reductions take place within this demographic.
Although this study was only limited to women, men would probably gain similar benfits from following these simple daily habits as well.
Duke University professor, Dr. Laura Svetkey, said the study provides great evidence for important long-term benefits from a low blood pressure diet, “it’s nice to see research that really is aimed at helping people with prevention in a very practical way.”
Many noted the big differences found in the DASH diet.
