How Do You Want To Benefit From Yoga?

August 9, 2007

In my yoga classes, one of the first things we do as we begin class is “set an intention” or  in other words, a commitment to achieve some specific purpose.  The student may relate it directly to improving health,  physical appearance or may even desire to feel something under the skin.  Since each student  can only realize their intention, it is somewhat difficult at times to stay committed to it.  One effective way to accomplish the intention  is to make a more general intention versus a specific one.  Simply because there must be a feeling of success in order to adhere to your practice day in and day out.

It is also very important not to get bogged down by the intention or how it will be accomplished. Instead, focus on any positive outcome resulting from the practice that will have the intention at heart.  Sometimes, we don’t know how the intention will play out as well, because the student is dead set at realizing the desired result they want from the intention.  Instead, just allow the flow, the journey and observe the big picture instead of the little details.

Another idea that will help, is to stay focused on the intention often.  During the students practice they will always be reminded of what they are doing there in the first place.  If it is difficult in doing this, then give yourself some little reminders.  For instance,  “mindfully lengthen” or “mindfully strengthen”.

Whenever you are involved in an activity of any sort, including yoga, strength training or cardio.  It is very important to have an intention and staying focused on that intention to realize your exercise goals.  This will bring success!!!!
