How Old Are You Really?
February 19, 2007
We all remember Jack LaLanne. There are many people who are out there like him at age 70 running marathons, demonstrating great strength, and of course eating right. Although chronologically they may be like 70 years old, their age in terms of fitness and overall health is considered to have a biological age of 50.
So what does that mean exactly? Well, it really measures the “fitness” age your body is REALLY. So how do you determine your biological age? Biological age is calculated by testing the following things:
-
Blood Pressure
-
Body composition
-
Lung Function
-
Aerobic fitness
-
Flexibility
-
Muscular strength and endurance
-
Glucose levels, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels
There is not yet a standard test to test for a “biological age” , but it stands to reason that as you get older, and you work on these aspects that you will appear younger, feel younger and stay healthier because of posture, improved balance, and of course, improved mobility!

The most interesting thing about “biological age” is how much control the individual really has in the outcome. I personally do not relish taxing physical work (actually, work in general) but I have found that making a minimal effort improves my overall health immensely. The key, for me, is consistency. Just a little exercise, 3 or 4 times per week, is do-able. It also motivates me to want even more activity. A nice, as opposed to vicious, circle.
Bonnie, you are a living example of what exercise and especially yoga does for a person!! I think I would put you on a commercial for motivational purposes. I love you.
