How To Avoid Injury Doing Yoga

June 15, 2007

The poses that help reduce back pain in the practice of yoga are used very sensitively. You must consider moving slowly and continually monitor your sensations so that you can avoid moving in or out of the pose quickly that may cause you pain.

The following list is composed of poses that are good for relieving most cases of lower back pain, which is the most common type of back pain.  They most likely will not aggravate your spine and will build strength in the trunk muscles that support your spine. By doing so, this will make your spine less vulnerable to re-injury!!  Yay!

1)      Pelvic tilt:  Lying in a supine position with knees bent, tuck your tail under gently and reverse it.

2)      Modified supine bolding big toe pose I:  Lying in supine position, one leg extended and draw the other knee into the chest.

3)      Modified supine holding big toe pose II:  Lying in a supine position, draw both legs into the chest and hold.

4)      Bridge Pose

5)      Upward facing back stretch:  Lying supine, legs elevated, hold big toes with fingers and stretch up and over slightly

6)      Child’s Pose I:  Place arms behind the heels, with palms up.

7)      Child’s Pose II: Reach arms up over head.

8)       Cobra Pose.

When your spine no longer is irritated or painful, practice these poses to further develop your spinal musculature to help support your core.
