Overindulgence In Small Packages
July 15, 2008
A study in The Journal of Consumer Research suggests smaller packages can lead to consumers eating more. In one study, students were primed to think about their body shape and then given potato chips while watching television. The results found they ate nearly twice as many chips when given nine small bags as when given two large ones. They didn’t hesitate to open a second, third, or fourth small bag. 46.1 grams of potato chips was eaten by weight-concious students from small bags while only 23.5 grams was eaten from larger bags.
The authors of the study took particular interest in “multipacks” of single-serve portions, like the Haagen Dazs ice cream cups known as “Little Pleasures.” Alex Mindlin stated, “consumers may merrily consume the innocently small packages of Little Pleasures at an even higher pace leading to over consumption.”
