Pregnant Obese Women More At Risk Physically And Financially
April 4, 2008
Leading researcher Susan Y. Chu said, “Right now, about one if five women in the United States who deliver babies are obese. Given that there are about 4 million births in the United States each year, that translates to almost 1 million obese women giving birth.”
Chu also says that obesity through-out pregnancy requires more health-care services, “even if there is a small increase, it is going to have substantial financial implications.”
The report is published in the April 3 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.
This study collected data from 13,442 pregnancies that occurred between 2000 to 2004. The researchers looked at the correlation between obesity and how many or much health-care services were used before and during pregnancy.
As stated above, Chu’s team found that obese women are significantly more likely to stay longer in hospitals compared with healthy women. On average, a hospital stay was 4.1 days longer for obese women then those of normal weight.
Furthermore, obese women needed more ultrasounds, prenatal tests, and more medications than healthy pregnant women.
One Dr. Richard Rieder stated, “This article accurately reflects the well-known fact that obesity is a significant risk factor in pregnancy.
This is all just a small example of the massive problem that obesity costs our society, both to individual health as well as the economic cost to our institutions.”
