The Perfect Summer Diet
June 4, 2007
We are always looking for a quick fix to get lean for summer. The following are suggestions to help you get that “lean” look in a safe and reasonable, yet effective way:
- Think lifestyle, not “diet”.
Remember diets tend to be temporary, but you want a healthy lifestyle that you can live with! It really is all about habits, so practice a more healthy one by eliminating a few of your unhealthy ones!
- Eat real food, not junk!
Easy to say, huh? However eat as close to whole or it’s natural state to gain the most nutrition. Stay away from snack foods or sweets. Eat more protein, veggies, beans, whole grains and fruits. Less refined sugars or processed foods.
- Get plenty of rest and manage your stress.
All of our bodies need rest, recovery and relaxation! Decrease stress with breathing, laughter, yoga, or other activities that bring you joy.
- Drink more water!!!
Approximately 3-4 quarts a day minimum, instead of high-calorie, high sugar beverages, such as soda, juice, sweetened teas, sports drinks, fancy coffee drinks or alcohol. This can add up to 800 calories to your meal!
- Don’t eat when you’re not hungry.
Eat when you are! And then eat nutritiously! Eliminate mindless eating or late night snacking. And especially eating while doing other activities!
- Get more exercise!
Daily, if you can! Aerobically exercise 3-6 times per week at 30-45 minutes a session. Strength train 2-3 times per week to build lean muscle and increase your metabolism. Then add yoga and pilates to your life to bring balance and core strength.
- Be consistent!
Stay focused on your goals and if you fall off the wagon, hop right back on! We all do that occasionally. Get a friend, one who is willing to eat healthy and exercise consistently. You will have a blast!
Have a wonderful summer and feel great!!
