Watching Too Much TV Results In Poor Health

April 7, 2008

MONDAY April 7, 2008–New study shows that children who have a television in their bedroom not only leads to more TV viewing, but also results in less time exercising, less time spent with the family, lower consumption of fruits and vegeatables, and more sweetened beverages.

The study’s lead author Daheia Barr-Anderson says, “The big take-home message from our study is that TVs should be removed from kids’ bedrooms, and it could have a positive effect on kid’s health.

About 68 percent of American teenagers have televisions in their bedrooms.  Children between ages 8 and 18 spend more than three hours every day watching television.

The data used in this study was collected through a questionnaire mailed to 781 teens who had a mean age of 17.2 years.

The fact that two-thirds of this group had a TV, also demonstrated that a teen would regularly watch more than five hours of TV daily, compared to those who didn’t have a TV.

All teenagers with a television set participated in less physical activities, had lower grade point averages, and attended less family dinners–which resulted in less fruits and vegetables.

Clinical assistant professor of child adolescent psychiatry at NYU Anita Gurian says, “For most kids, a TV in the bedroom is not a healthy thing.  It’s not bad for all kids; there are those who use it constructively, and there is a lot of good stuff on TV, but it definitely has its downside.”  She also adds, “Parents should know that research has shown TV”s  downside effects on grades, eating habits, in attraction to violence, and most imortantly, in social relationships.  If teens are in their bedrooms, watching TV for three hours a day, they don’t have time to develop relationships or to do homework.”

Parents need to become more involved in their teens lives concerning how much TV they actually view, considering it potentially has so many negative effects.
